โšก Growth Hack #5 โ€” Conversion Engineering

The DM Funnel:
From First Follow
to Paying Customer

Your follower count is a vanity metric unless you have a system to convert followers into customers. The DM is the highest-converting channel on X โ€” with 15โ€“30% conversion rates when done right. Here's the exact sequence, word-for-word.

Important Caveat First

This method only works when you have genuine rapport and value to offer. Cold pitching strangers via DM is spam and will get you blocked and reported. This system requires a minimum of 2โ€“3 genuine public interactions with someone BEFORE the DM sequence begins. If you skip that โ€” you're just annoying people.

The Numbers That Make This Worth Doing

100

followers/month who engage with your content

20

qualify for DM outreach (have the problem you solve)

3โ€“6

become paying customers ($47โ€“$499/each)

That's $141โ€“$2,994/month from DMs alone. Every month. Compounding.

Step 0: Who Gets the DM (The Qualification Filter)

Don't DM everyone. DM only people who pass this filter โ€” it keeps your conversion rate high and your reputation intact.

โœ“ Engaged with your content 2+ times
โœ“ Their profile shows they have the problem you solve
โœ“ They've asked a question you can genuinely answer
โœ“ They've expressed frustration with something you help with
โœ• Never interacted with you before
โœ• Their profile isn't a fit for what you offer
โœ• They just followed but haven't engaged
โœ• Their follower count > yours by 100x (they won't see your DM)

The 5-Message Sequence (Word-for-Word)

Each message has a specific job. Don't skip steps. Don't pitch in message 1. Don't be vague in message 4. Follow the sequence.

Message 1

Open the conversation with genuine curiosity. No pitch. No mention of your product.

Day 0 โ€” After 2-3 public interactions
"Hey [name] โ€” been following your content for a bit. Saw your reply on [specific tweet topic] โ€” you made a really good point about [specific thing they said]. Quick question: are you actively trying to grow on X right now, or is it more of a side thing for you at this stage?"
Why it works: Asks a yes/no question that opens a real conversation. They feel seen, not sold to. 40โ€“60% response rate from qualified leads.
Message 2

Listen and ask the deeper question. Still no pitch.

When they reply to M1
"[Acknowledge their answer genuinely]. Got it โ€” so [reflect back what they said]. What's been the biggest friction point? Like if you could fix one thing about [relevant struggle] tomorrow โ€” what would it be?"
Why it works: Gets them talking about their problem in their own words. This is the most valuable intelligence you can gather. It also positions you as someone who listens, not just pitches.
Message 3

Deliver unexpected free value. Still no pitch.

When they answer M2
"That's exactly what I spent [timeframe] figuring out. Here's what actually moved the needle: [Share a specific, actionable insight relevant to their exact problem โ€” 3-5 sentences. Not vague. Specific. Ideally something they haven't heard before.] This alone should [specific outcome]. Let me know if it's useful."
Why it works: The value-first move. Proves you know what you're talking about. Builds genuine trust. The person now feels they owe you attention โ€” reciprocity principle.
Message 4

The soft bridge โ€” introduce the product without making it feel like a pitch.

2-3 days after M3 (or when they respond positively)
"Glad that was helpful. One more thing โ€” I actually packaged up everything I know about [their problem] into [product name]. It's basically [what it is in one sentence]. I'm not going to spam you about it, but given what you said about [specific thing from M2], I think it'd hit different for you. Would it be weird if I sent you a link?"
Why it works: Asking permission before sending the link does 2 critical things: (1) they psychologically commit by saying 'yes', (2) they feel respected, not sold. The 'would it be weird' framing is disarming and gets 70-80% 'yes'.
Message 5

The close. Clean, specific, with proof and a low-friction CTA.

Immediately after they say yes
"Here you go: [link] Context: [2-sentence description of what they get]. [Name one specific person who used it and what happened]. It's [price] โ€” one time, instant access. If it doesn't help with [their specific problem from M2], let me know and I'll refund you. No forms, no back-and-forth."
Why it works: Personalized to their specific pain. Social proof included. Objection handled pre-emptively (the refund line removes risk). One clear CTA. This message closes at 25โ€“35% from qualified leads.

Handling the 6 Most Common Objections

Objection: "Not right now / maybe later"
"Totally fair. When's a better time โ€” like are we talking weeks or months? Just want to make sure I follow up when it's actually useful." [Set a reminder, follow up once, then let it go. No more than 2 follow-ups total.]
Objection: "Already tried something similar"
"Interesting โ€” what was the main thing it didn't solve? Because that's usually [specific thing your product does differently]. Genuinely curious if we have the same gap or if it's a different problem."
Objection: "What exactly is it?"
"[One sentence: format + outcome + timeframe]. Nothing fancy. Here's [result from a real customer who had the same profile as them]."
Objection: "Is this worth it for someone at my stage?"
"Honest answer: depends. If you're at [stage] and [condition], then yes โ€” [specific thing they'd get value from]. If you're at [different stage], probably premature. What's your situation right now?"
Objection: "$49 is a lot right now"
"Totally. If it's a budget thing, no worries โ€” I'd rather you wait until it makes sense than feel stretched. If it's a 'not sure if it's worth it' thing, what would you need to see to know it's worth it?"
Objection: No reply to M3 or M4
Wait 5 days, then: "Hey โ€” just checking in. No pressure at all โ€” just wanted to make sure my last message didn't get buried. Did the [tip you shared] help?" One follow-up only. If no reply, move on. Never send a third message unprompted.

The Math (So You Know What to Expect)

New engaged followers/month
100

People who reply, like, or quote-tweet you

% who qualify for DM outreach
20%

= 20 people/month

% who respond to M1
50%

= 10 conversations

% who reach M4 (soft pitch)
60%

= 6 people

% who ask for the link
70%

= 4 people

% who buy
30%

= 1โ€“2 customers/month from DMs alone

Revenue at $49/product
$49โ€“$98

Per month from this one channel

Revenue at $297/product
$297โ€“$594

Per month. Stacks with organic + content

These numbers are conservative. With a good product and a warm audience, you'll see better. Scale with follower growth.
